Happy Birthday Smith Engineering

This day, 11 years ago, represents the founding and birth of Smith Engineering. 

For most large companies an 11-year birthday would be no more than another day on the calendar.  In the world of entrepreneurs and small businesses, starting as the sole employee trying to find customers and build a business, getting to this milestone seems like it will take an eternity. For a small business 11 years is an achievement to be celebrated when almost 70% of the small business have failed by this point.

Eleven years ago, we signed up one of our first customers, Princeton University. We are proud to continue to serve them, to this day, as they embark on some of the latest approaches toward driving sustainability with the Tiger Plant and heat pumps.

Another measure of longevity of a sustaining organization is the team of people that help support the mission and vision of the business. From the inception of Smith Engineering until now, we have been able to assemble a great team. We are very proud that we have maintained some great people along the way.  We still have employees #4 Christina Gracia, #6 Ram Nagarkoti, #7 John Rundell, and of course employee #1 our founder Travis Smith. In addition, in 2022 we are pleased to say we survived the COVID19 Pandemic without laying off any team members.

Of course, a birthday is not just a celebration of the past but a look forward to the years ahead. We have added 7 new people in the last 12 months and are looking to hire another 8 people in the next 6 months.  We don’t want to hire people just to fill a slot, but we want to identify and recruit what we call purple squirrels. Our employees are out of the box thinkers who are excited to work at Smith Engineering. And because of the quality of people we hire, we are continuously surprised by the excellence of each individual.

A business is measured by dollars and cents and 2021 was the best year to date and 2022 is shaping up to be even better. We can’t emphasize enough the importance of how the people we’ve hired have contributed to the success of our business.
