Building Operations + Maintenance Workforce Training
Smith Engineering provides customized Workforce Training to educate building operations staff, so they can identify opportunities for energy efficiency and operational improvements.
Serving institutions across the country, Smith Engineering is the largest Commercial Building Training Provider in New York.
We offer a custom training program to equip your building O&M staff with skills to operate energy-efficient, grid-flexible, and electrified building systems that reduce organizations’ contributions to climate change.
Within the state of New York, the program is funded by NYSERDA, which means there’s usually no out of pocket costs to our clients, outside of the portion of employee compensation that’s paying for operators’ time to attend trainings.

Enhanced In-House Expertise
We empower your staff by training them to identify cost and energy-saving opportunities, proactively maintain equipment, and quickly diagnose and address problems when they arise.
This work will guide your facility staff to develop new maintenance routines and operating strategies that minimize resource use, increase staff’s understanding of their facility's systems so they can continue to self-sufficiently improve operations, and improve comfort for occupants of the spaces.
Interactive Seminars
Training sessions are conducted in-person or virtually in an interactive, seminar format to help facilities’ staff understand equipment operation and performance and impact on overall system energy use and reliability.
Custom-Built Curriculum
Smith Engineering trainers develop all courses and curriculum, including custom content related to site-specific dynamics and observed opportunities.
Beginning with an extensive site survey and data collection process for each building, we tailor the training to your building assets and design. Each session is recorded for future training use and delivered by an instructor that has an extensive background in the topic(s).
Education for All Levels
Training is designed for Chief Engineers, Assistant Chief Engineers, Lead Engineers, Engineers, Mechanics, Helpers, and Sustainability personnel and Utility Leads.
Chiller Plant Training
We educate chiller plant operators on the efficient operation of the major components of their plant, including methods for saving energy and reducing costs and carbon emissions.
Controls Training
Every plant has an underlying controls system. We train plant personnel on the basic operation of these systems using our in-house controls experts and programmers.
Heat Pump Training
Large heat pumps are increasingly important for reducing costs and carbon emissions for facilities with simultaneous heating and cooling demands. We teach the operation and discuss applicability of these units.
Air Handling Units Training
Air handling units are responsible for a huge amount of power use, but are often overlooked from a training perspective. We teach optimization techniques that operators can use to immediately save energy, and we train operators on more in-depth energy savings measures.
