NYSERDA Building O&M Training

NYSERDA Building Operations & Maintenance Training Program for the State of New York

NYSERDA’s Building Operations & Maintenance Training Program provides funding for organizations to design and deliver custom, hands-on training for their maintenance and facilities teams. The program is designed to help organizations save energy and money, improve the performance of existing equipment, and transition to advanced building systems. Organizations can connect with a training partner of their choice to develop a unique training program tailored to their organization's needs — with little or no out of pocket costs!

Building owners and property managers across New York have successfully used project funds to:

  • Customize training programs for their staff based on their own buildings and equipment

  • Create on-site training facilities

  • Develop coaching and mentoring programs

  • Film on-demand training videos to support on-going staff education

Requirements to Get Started

  • Your facility must have annual energy expenditures of $1 million or more (all fuels and uses)

  • The building must pay the Systems Benefits Charge (SBC)

  • Calculate each building’s total annual energy expenditure

  • Document the square footage of each building

  • Record the number of people per building who are eligible to participate in the training program

  • List the job titles for each person

  • Supply some additional application information

NYSERDA provides this program with a cost share model of 70% of costs being covered by NYSERDA for most facilities, and 90% covered for facilities located in a disadvantaged community — up to $500,000 per project. The customer portion of the cost share can be covered by the cost of labor to support the training activities. There are typically no additional out-of-pocket expenses for this program. The budget is determined by the number of potential trainees you’ll reach — with live and recorded training sessions. A portfolio may submit 30 to 60 names for the training while a commercial building may submit 10 to 13 names.
