Meet Eric Wachtman
Smith Engineering is excited to recognize Eric Wachtman from Princeton University for his service and impact in the engineering space. Eric was a Union Operator before being hired at Princeton and over his 30-year career worked his way up to Chief Engineer where he proudly serves the facilities department.
Eric oversees Princeton’s central energy plant, the HPCRC data center, the TIGER plant, and the TIGER-CUB plant. Together these facilities provide the campus's heating, cooling, partial electric load requirements, and backup support. Princeton’s main campus covers approximately 600 acres, with more than 8,000 students, and over 200 buildings.
Our relationship with Princeton University and Eric goes way back. Princeton University was Smith Engineering’s first customer in 2011, and we continue working together today. Over our 13-year history we have collaborated with Eric on projects including the chiller plant optimization, the TIGER heat pump design review, and numerous trainings.
Eric’s leadership at Princeton extends beyond technical expertise; it is rooted in trust and mutual respect. By emphasizing the importance of building lasting partnerships in and outside the department, he ensures that every project meets the high standards he has set over the years. His approach is guided by a few simple rules — show up on time, be courteous, communicate proactively, and deliver a finished product. Eric demonstrates genuine care for his colleagues and the university. Whether he is working with a new team member or coordinating with external partners, he exemplifies consideration and courtesy, fostering a collaborative culture that supports the needs and well-being of Princeton.
After 32 years at Princeton, Eric recently announced his retirement, effective March 3, 2025. He will be missed not only by his colleagues at Princeton, but also by us at Smith because he’s been so wonderful to work with.
When we talked with Eric about his time at Princeton, he shared he feels humbled and grateful for the opportunity to serve an institution he respects deeply. His journey resonates with the spirit of Princeton itself — a commitment to knowledge, excellence, and a strong sense of community.
