Job Opening:

Smith Engineering Senior Energy Engineer

Smith Engineering provides energy engineering for central plant optimization. For 13 years, we’ve built a reputation for discovering and solving mysteries in facilities.

Our goal is to engineer a sustainable future for our planet and generations to come. We push the boundaries of excellence to improve operations and increase efficiency in critical facilities.

Smith Engineering is seeking a Senior Energy Engineer to work at our customer sites in the New York Metro area and in our Manhattan office. This role reports to Smith Engineering’s Energy Group Manager, and is responsible for the following:

  • Lead and manage mechanical engineering projects from conception to completion, ensuring all projects are delivered on time, within scope, and within budget.

  • Expertly perform all engineering related activities for central energy plants with special focus on chilled water plants.

  • Perform utility plant load models — validated with trend data, rules of thumb and other available information.

  • Develop capacity models based on load models and installed equipment.

  • Provide technical assistance on various engineering, design, and construction issues relating to plant design, automatic temperature control systems and specifications, and hydronic systems (chilled water, heating water, etc.).

  • Perform professional mechanical engineering work and conduct surveys of proposed and existing equipment rooms, equipment, building infrastructure, energy usage, and mechanical systems to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.

  • Perform construction administration and develop construction and installation plans, specifications, and cost estimates. Update infrastructure layout plans — including coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.

  • Incorporate advanced technology, modeling techniques, concept development, design requirements, load calculations, and operating strategies to account for the proper installation and functioning of equipment and systems according to specifications, implementing future-ready solutions with mechanical engineering design standards.

  • Work as an individual or as part of a cross-functional team of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects, assist with laying out installation of equipment, calculate costs and quantities of material, equipment, and labor, and ensure project work conforms with specifications, schematics, compliance documentation, and regulatory and technical analysis memos.

  • Assist with development and scoping of plant upgrades and plant designs.

  • Provide guidance and training to entry-level engineers.

  • Comply with regulatory requirements pertaining to the data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, and record compliance and retention.

  • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner.

  • Remain current in latest mechanical engineering techniques and practices.

  • Work collaboratively with other engineers, owners, and stakeholders on plant design projects.

  • Remain current in latest mechanical engineering codes and standards.

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to the company’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

  • Prepare technical basis of design reports and presentations detailing proposed design solution for further development.

  • Licensed Professional Engineer with 10+ years of relevant post education experience in designing mechanical systems for the built environment.

  • Proficient knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to project work-related issues.

  • Experience in independently and successfully compiling comprehensive design drawing packages.

  • Experience with building and infrastructure planning, design, and construction management — including active involvement in a variety of rehabilitation and new design projects.

  • Experience with drawing set generation and management in the Autodesk suite of design products.

  • Experience with hydraulic modeling in Pipe-flo and/or Fathom AFT.

  • Experience with Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Experience with drawing mark-ups in Bluebeam PDF software.

  • Ability to perform load models utilizing Microsoft Excel, Trane Trace 700, IESVE, or eQUEST modeling software. Experience in IES is preferred.

  • Ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications, and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.

  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.

  • Project management experience with small to mid-level projects including tracking hours and expenses for project work.
