Energy Audits + Rebates

Energy Audits for Scoping Energy Projects

Smith Engineering’s Energy Group is known across the US for our thorough feasibility studies and comprehensive energy reports.

In the state of NY, we support our clients in effectively leveraging various NYSERDA programs to help fund decarb efforts — through energy audits, decarb master plans, and workforce training initiatives.

Whether you’re discovering that NYC Local Law 97 means you’ll soon have to pay carbon fines or you just want to bring in experts to lower your utility bill, Smith Engineering has a proven track-record of making monumental impacts to the efficiency of critical facilities.

Energy Audits

As a leading provider of ASHRAE Level 1, 2, and 3 Energy Audits, we have a proven process to ensure measurable and financially significant results.

The first step in the Energy Audit is to perform a complete survey of your facilities’ existing HVAC infrastructure. We document every BMS screen, create comprehensive equipment tables, conduct a utility analysis, and capture all the issues that we uncover. From sub-optimal setpoints to a malfunctioning valve, we catalog anything that could be impacting performance.

Documenting the existing sequences comes next, to ensure the team thoroughly understands how the building works and is currently operated. This information helps inform assumptions in our existing model and sets us up to be able to propose new high-level sequences, outlining how each piece of equipment should operate. From here we do a load model to determine the building’s peak load and cooling and heating tonnage per hour. Then we develop an existing energy model to determine for the building and the baseline energy usage for the building and associated plants. We calibrate this model to utility bills per ASHRAE guidelines to ensure that the modeling is an accurate representation of your building. Once ECMs are identified and scopes are developed, we calculate the savings associated with these ECMs from modifications to this existing model.

The model is an incredibly powerful tool and illustrates the energy and cost savings the building can realize if specific ECMs are implemented. Finally, we develop an economic model that includes cost estimates for carrying out ECMs, opportunities for rebates, and potential carbon penalties that can be avoided.

Rebates

Some states and many utility providers offer substantial rebates to customers who tackle ECMs. As rebate experts, we help our clients discover, apply for, and receive rebates from a variety of sources.

Training

We educate building operations staff, so they can identify opportunities for energy efficiency and operational improvements

Onsite Energy Manager NYSERDA

Utilize NYSERDA cost share funding to hire a dedicated, part-time, on-site energy manager to improve facility performance by identifying maintenance and energy efficiency improvement opportunities. Leverage our expertise, in collaboration with your existing facilities team, to achieve your energy and carbon reduction goals.

Decarbonization Master Planning

We will develop a Decarbonization Masterplan that provides a roadmap for your assets future, highlighting carbon reduction and capital improvement opportunities to help achieve your carbon reduction goals within your required timeline and available budget.
